Windows Terminal is Microsoft’s modern replacement for the classic Command Prompt and PowerShell windows. It supports multiple tabs and split panes, each running any shell you choose — PowerShell, Command Prompt, WSL, Azure Cloud Shell, or Git Bash.
Text rendering is GPU-accelerated, so scrolling is buttery smooth even with large outputs. It has full Unicode and emoji support, customizable color schemes, background images, and transparent/acrylic backgrounds. Configuration is done through a clean JSON settings file, and there’s a GUI settings editor too.
If you use WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), Windows Terminal is the best way to access it. It’s open source and actively maintained by Microsoft.
